Hook Jam

Watch a Hook Jam at McMusic Lessons & Performances. A Hook Jam is an exercise in musical improvisation. Jams are based on the themes and melodies, (the hooks), of favorite songs or original music. Click the video below to listen to an example of the music instructor and piano student jam on The Beetle Juice Theme by Danny Elfman. Listen for when the instructor develops the jam into a groove that mirrors Rollercoaster of Love by The Ohio Players. He then begins to breakdown the jam into an atmospheric, spoken word mashup of Phish’s “Kung” and Edgar Allen Poe’s poem “The Raven”. The breakdown also displays some of the effects on the Helix guitar processor pedal.
